Regional farmers' market with 60 stalls between the cathedral and market square
Soest, with around 50,000 inhabitants, is the district capital in southeastern Westphalia and was one of the most powerful Hanseatic cities of the Holy Roman Empire for centuries. The almost completely preserved sandstone city wall, the twelve Romanesque and Gothic churches, the medieval labyrinth of alleys around St. Patrokli Cathedral — all of this makes Soest one of the most beautiful old towns in North Rhine-Westphalia. The city is nestled in the Soester Börde, one of the most fertile loess plains in Germany. Wheat, sugar beets, and vegetables grow here on black soil, and direct marketers, beekeepers, cheesemakers, and distillers have established a dense network of farm shops and manufactories here.
Once a year, on the first Sunday in September, the region's producers bring their products directly into the old town: the Soester Bördebauernmarkt. The approximately 60 market stalls are set up on Vreithof, Domplatz, Petrikirchhof Nord, and Rathausstraße — precisely in the most prominent squares of the city center, framed by the cathedral, St. Petri Church, and the town hall. Strolling from one stall to the next, visitors simultaneously experience a journey through a thousand years of Westphalian sacred architecture.
The offerings are consistently regional and seasonal. On the tables, you'll find hard cheeses from the Börde, semi-hard cheeses from pasture-raised cows, cream cheese, yogurts, and quark, alongside honey from the forests of the nearby Arnsberg Forest. Fruit farmers bring apples of old varieties, pears, plums, quinces, as well as apple juices and fruit liqueurs. Bakers supply sourdough breads, pumpernickel, and autumnal yeast pastries. Those who prefer it spicier will find pickled gherkins, pickled pumpkins, chutneys, and hot vinegars. The non-food stalls are also worth a stroll: perennial plants, heather, and blueberry plants for your own garden, artisanal soaps, wood and basket ware, sheep wool products made from local wool.
In 2026, the Bördebauernmarkt coincides with a Sunday shopping event in Soest's city center. From 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., shops around the market — boutiques, bookstores, jewelry studios, stationery shops — will be open. A rare combination in a medium-sized town: shopping on a Sunday with a market atmosphere right outside.
The Bördebauernmarkt is organized by the Verein Soester Wirtschaft e.V. in close cooperation with the city's WMS event agency. The association brings together retailers, restaurateurs, and service providers in Soest's city center and has been ensuring for years that regional direct marketers receive prominent locations and fair stall fees.
The first Sunday in September is traditionally a major event day in Soest: alongside the Bördebauernmarkt, other cultural offerings take place in the old town, and the city center's businesses use the occasion for special promotions. For families, a trip with a picnic on the nearby Großer Teich is worthwhile — and for architecture fans, a visit to the cathedral before or after browsing the market.
Admission is free. The city center is a ten-minute walk from Soest train station — and by car, a market Sunday in Soest's old town almost always means parking a little further out and then walking in. Parking garages on the edge of the old town are recommended.
A day dedicated to the Soester Börde: regional direct marketers lined up between Patrokli Cathedral and the town hall, plus the Sunday shopping event in the old town. Visitors to Soest can combine a market stroll with a walk through the medieval alleys and a stop at one of the many cafés around the market square.
Accompanying program will be published in advance on the websites of the City of Soest and the Verein Soester Wirtschaft.
