Gropiusstadt — A large housing estate with its own identity
Gropiusstadt, located at the southern end of Berlin's Neukölln district, is one of West Berlin's largest housing estates, planned in the 1960s based on designs by Walter Gropius. With around 37,000 inhabitants, it has developed its own distinct neighbourhood identity — and with the Wutzky shopping centre and the Rotraut-Richter-Platz in front of it, it also has its own focal point. This is precisely where the Wutzky-Kiez-Sommerfest takes place every summer: the most important neighbourhood festival in the district.
Stage, bouncy castle, free popcorn
The format is deliberately accessible: a stage in the centre of the square, with a bouncy castle, giant dartboard, and face painting next to it; stands from local initiatives, clubs, and resident offerings; a stage with live music (in previous years, for example, the band Jumpin' Pete); children's activities such as the Wutzky pharmacy's lucky dip wheel. For the youngest visitors, there is free popcorn and candy floss. The Wutzky business association organises the festival together with the shopkeepers of the shopping centre, supplemented by contributions from the Gropiusstadt-Nord neighbourhood management.
Meeting point for the neighbourhood
The Wutzky-Kiez-Sommerfest is not primarily a tourist event — but a neighbourhood festival that aims to showcase the diversity of Neukölln. The district mayor's public consultation hours, stands from social welfare organisations, and information tables from local schools and kindergartens are part of the programme. This makes the festival an annual event where Gropiusstadt celebrates itself.
Pandemic break, then revival
After a two-year break during the Corona pandemic, the Wutzky-Kiez-Sommerfest returned to Rotraut-Richter-Platz in 2022 and has been an annual event ever since. In 2025, the event took place on July 4th; another edition is planned for summer 2026, with the exact date to be announced by the Wutzky business association about two months beforehand.
In the Neukölln district, at the Wutzky shopping centre
Rotraut-Richter-Platz, named after the actress Rotraut Richter, is located directly in front of the Wutzky shopping centre at the southern end of the U7 underground line in Gropiusstadt. The shopping centre, with around 60 tenants (Joachim-Gottschalk-Weg 21, 12353 Berlin), has been the commercial centre of the estate for decades. Admission to the summer festival is free, and families are explicitly welcome.
