City tour and exhibition sites related to Luther's Diet of 1521
In April 1521, Martin Luther stood before Emperor Charles V and the Imperial Estates in Worms to defend his writings. His much-quoted sentence, “Here I stand, I can do no other,” marks a turning point in church history to this day. The city of Worms has dedicated its own cultural profile to this event, which can be experienced year-round and culminates each spring.
A thematic tour connects the five central locations of the events. Lutherplatz with the monumental Lutherdenkmal by Ernst Rietschel — the world's largest Reformation monument — forms the symbolic center. Bischofshof marks the historical site of the negotiation itself; the Dreifaltigkeitskirche preserves the memory in Protestant tradition; the Magnuskirche is considered one of the oldest Protestant places of worship; and Lutherplatz itself serves as a venue for events and gatherings of the Protestant community.
The trained city guides of the Interessengemeinschaft Wormser Gästeführer (IWG) offer city tours that are both historically informed and engagingly narrated. The main season runs from April to October; public tours without prior registration are available, as are group bookings in multiple languages.
Since 2021, Worms has been a UNESCO World Heritage site with its SchUM sites and is simultaneously one of Europe's central Reformation cities. The Luther Memorial complements the city's tourist and cultural profile with a dimension of theological and intellectual history that attracts pilgrims, study travelers, and school classes annually.
In 2026, Worms continues its tradition of Luther tours. Public guided tours start in April and run until late October. Group bookings are available year-round, also in English, French, and Dutch.
The Luther Memorial is linked to other cultural highlights of Worms — the SchUM sites, St. Peter's Cathedral, and the Nibelungen saga. Combined thematic routes offer a comprehensive exploration of the city.
The exact program for 2026 will be continuously updated by the Worms Tourist Information. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
