North Germany's Smallest Big Festival

The Woodbunge Festival is a declaration of love for the DIY spirit of the North German independent scene. It has been held since the 2010s in the 700-soul village of Holzbunge in the municipality on the Bistensee, in the middle of the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Limited to around 300 visitors per edition, the festival feels less like a concert and more like a garden party among friends – with the difference that bands from all over Europe are on stage.

Musical Profile

The genre spectrum clearly lies in the alternative range: Post Rock, Stoner Rock, Alternative Metal, Indie Rock, Post Metal, and Pop Punk. Instead of big headliners, the organizers rely on a hand-picked selection of bands that are less visible in the mainstream but are regularly on European tour routes.

Concept and Philosophy

The festival follows the motto „celebrare humanum est" – to celebrate is human. The family atmosphere is intentional: short distances between the stage, camping, and bar, direct contact between bands and the audience, a single stage location. Those who perform here often stay for the whole weekend.

Rendsburg-Eckernförde District

Holzbunge is located about 30 kilometers west of Kiel and about 20 kilometers east of Rendsburg, nestled between Bistensee and Westensee. The rural location in the Hüttener Berge Nature Park shapes the atmosphere – after the concerts, it’s easy to head to the campfire or to the tent next door. The festival is one of the few of its kind in the north of Schleswig-Holstein and has built up a loyal following since its first edition.
