Advent market on the 2nd Advent weekend at Karl-Lederer-Platz
The Geretsried Christmas Market is one of the authentic Advent markets in southern Upper Bavaria. The venue is the central Karl-Lederer-Platz in the town center – wooden huts nestle around the square, creating a cozy Christmas village atmosphere. The market takes place annually on the second Advent weekend and is considered a social and cultural highlight of the pre-Christmas season in the town in the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen.
More than 36 huts – supported by local clubs, associations, and artisans – offer a colorful assortment: Christmas decorations, carved wooden figures, felted and woven textiles, crochet items, spices, spreads, jewelry, pottery. Culinary offerings range from classic mulled wine and punch to Langos, Puszta burgers, chestnuts, and roasted almonds, as well as international specialties.
The Christmas Market explicitly sees itself as a family market. Miniature train and carriage rides, craft activities, and meeting St. Nicholas and Christkind delight the youngest visitors. Brass concerts by local music bands, children's singing, and performances by regional choirs shape the musical program. On Friday and Saturday, the market remains open until 10 p.m. – a relaxed atmosphere after work.
Geretsried, with around 26,000 inhabitants, is the largest town in the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and is located in the state of Bavaria, at the transition from the Alpine foothills to the Alps. The town has an extraordinary history – it was newly founded in 1950 as a city for displaced persons. The Christmas Market, with its strongly club-supported format, reflects the close community cohesion of this young Upper Bavarian town.
On the second Advent weekend of 2026, from December 4th to 6th, the Geretsried Christmas Market at Karl-Lederer-Platz will once again open its wooden hut doors. More than 36 exhibitors, supported by local clubs, associations, and regional artisans, will offer Advent decorations, carved wooden figures, felt and woven goods, jewelry, and pottery.
Culinary offerings range from mulled wine, punch, and tea to Langos, Puszta burgers, bratwurst, and chestnuts, as well as sweet classics like roasted almonds and fried pastries. Brass concerts by local music bands, performances by children's choirs, and the traditional visit from St. Nicholas will shape the supporting program. On Friday and Saturday, the market will be open until 10 p.m., and on Sunday until the early evening.
Free admission. Food and drinks at the huts at usual Christmas market prices (mulled wine approx. €4-5, small meals from approx. €4-6).
Geretsried is located about 50 km south of Munich on the B11 federal road. By train via the BOB line Munich–Lenggries (stop Wolfratshausen, then bus 7368), by car take the Schäftlarn exit from the A95 (Munich–Garmisch).
Admission to the Christmas Market is free. Food and drinks are available at the huts of local clubs and exhibitors.
Those who want to experience the market in a relaxed way should come on Friday or Saturday evening after dark – the string lights and the scent of mulled wine create the most beautiful Advent atmosphere then. Families should plan for Sunday with a visit from St. Nicholas and the children's program.
