One of the first Palatinate wine festivals of the year with Maypole raising on May 1st
Wollmesheim is located on the western edge of Landau, framed by vineyards and the nearby Palatinate Forest. The historic wine-growing village has been part of the city of Landau since 1937 but has retained its village character. The May and Wine Festival on May 1st is one of the first wine festivals in the region and marks the beginning of the Palatinate wine festival season, which runs from May to October along the entire Südliche Weinstraße (Southern Palatinate Wine Route).
The highlight of the festival day is the raising of the Maypole by the local youth – a custom that attracts many onlookers each year. The colorfully decorated Maypole is erected with strength and skill, traditionally accompanied by pretzels, Weißwurst (white sausages), and a welcome drink. This is followed by the musical program.
Local vintners serve their young wines: dry Rieslings, fruity Pinot Blancs, sparkling wine, and the first Palatinate Rosé of the year. Palatinate specialties such as Bratwurst (fried sausage), Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Flammkuchen (savory tart), and salads complete the offering. The rectory garden offers coffee and cake, and warm meals are available at lunchtime. The atmosphere is relaxed and familial – a true Palatinate festival Saturday with sun, wine, and good company.
Wollmesheim is easily reachable from Landau by city bus in just a few minutes. Those who wish to combine the festival with a hike can explore the surrounding vineyards on well-marked trails – for example, via Wollmesheimer Berg with views of the Rhine Plain and the Vosges mountains.
The 2026 edition of the Wollmesheim May and Wine Festival will take place on May 1st. As in previous years, Wollmesheim's associations and the youth group are organizing a festival program that marks the start of the wine festival season in Southern Palatinate.
The traditional festival day brings the entire village community together and attracts hundreds of guests from Landau and the region each year. The exact stage and music program will be published a few weeks before the event on wollmesheim.com.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in spring 2026. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
