Seventh edition of the dragon boat race on the Allersee in Allerpark — Teams from the region compete over two days
The Wolfsburg Dragon Boat Cup will take place for the seventh time in 2026 — on September 5th and 6th on the Allersee in Allerpark. Teams from Wolfsburg and the region will compete against each other in spectacular races. The organizer is the Wolfsburger Kanu-Club, which has been leading the way in dragon boat racing in the city for years.
The event combines competitive sport with a family festival atmosphere: drumbeats on the water, cheers from the shore, picnic blankets on the lawns, and accompanying gastronomic offerings ensure an exciting weekend by the lake.
Dragon boats — long, narrow paddle boats with a dragon's head at the bow — originally come from China and have established themselves worldwide as a popular sport since the 1980s. In Germany, the discipline is popular in both competitive sports and corporate and club sports. The Wolfsburger Kanu-Club uses the ideal conditions of the Allersee to host its own dragon boat events for several years.
The Allersee in Allerpark — artificially created, with calm water and wide shore areas — offers the optimal setting: the straight lanes allow for fair races, the wide shore creates space for spectators, and the nearby infrastructure (BadeLand, Eis-Arena, stadium) complements the area.
Each boat has 16 to 20 paddlers, a drummer, and a helmsman. The participating teams come from sports clubs, companies, schools, and hobby groups in the region. The competition format includes heats, semi-finals, and final races over classic distances (200 to 500 meters).
Accompanying the competition, there are food stalls, seating areas, mascots, and a small stage program. For many teams, the Cup is as much a competition as it is the season finale — the tent and picnic life on the shore shapes the atmosphere.
Parallel to the club format, the WMG organizes the Wolfsburg Handwerks-Cup Drachenboot, which is specifically aimed at craft businesses in the region. Both formats complement each other and make Wolfsburg the dragon boat metropolis of Southeast Lower Saxony.
The seventh edition of the Wolfsburg Dragon Boat Cup will take place on September 5th and 6th, 2026, on the Allersee. Teams from the region will compete in heats, semi-finals, and final races. The shore will become a festival arena with catering, a stage, and family activities.
The exact daily program for 2026 will be published by the Wolfsburger Kanu-Club. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: race start in the morning, lunch break, finals in the late afternoon, and award ceremony at the end of the day.
