Three-day town festival with live music in Wittingen's city centre
The Wittinger Sommerfest is the largest and most popular town festival in the region between Gifhorn and Uelzen. For three days, the city centre becomes a festival mile with several stages, a long row of gastronomic stalls, sales stands, and hands-on activities. The atmosphere in the central market square, with its historic backdrop of half-timbered and brick houses, makes the festival unique.
The musical programme changes from year to year but consistently features a mix of regional bands, national cover bands, and DJ sets. For 2026, Taylor Experience has been announced as the Saturday headliner – Europe's first Taylor Swift cover show, bringing the work of the American pop icon to life with an elaborate stage show. This sends a clear signal to a younger audience.
The gourmet mile along the main streets offers a diverse gastronomic selection: Bratwurst and steaks, pizza and pasta, Asian specialities, crêpes, cocktails, and beer from regional breweries. On Saturday, Wittingen's city centre shops will open from 12 noon for a shopping afternoon – a tradition that makes the festival even more attractive for families.
Wittingen is a small town in the northern Gifhorn district, on the transition to the Lüneburg Heath. The town is regionally known primarily for the Wittinger Brewery, whose beer is also served at the Sommerfest. The historic city centre with its narrow streets and the St. Stephanus market church forms an attractive backdrop for the festival.
The festival weekend begins on Friday evening with the official opening and the first bands on stage. Throughout the weekend, various regional bands and cover bands will perform, complemented by DJ sets that keep the atmosphere going late into the evening. The Wittinger Brewery is a firm fixture with its beer stand, supplying the audience with local specialities.
The highlight is Saturday evening with Taylor Experience – a cover show that brings the work of the American pop icon Taylor Swift to life with an elaborate stage show, appealing particularly to younger visitors. Sunday focuses on the family programme: a morning pint, craft activities for children, and a relaxed conclusion.
