Guided wine hike with tastings on the Bodenheim Wine Trail during the grape harvest season
The Bodenheim Wine Trail leads through the most important vineyard sites of the wine community on the Rheinhessen Rhine bank. Over its several kilometers, the trail explains the grape varieties, the geological features of the Bodenheim sites, the viticulture history of the region, and the work of the vintners throughout the year with information boards placed at key points. The trail invites individual hikes all year round, but on one date in September, it becomes the stage for a special event.
The guided wine tasting on the Wine Trail combines hiking, education, and enjoyment. An expert guide – a vintner, viticulture expert, or municipal tourism official – accompanies the group and elaborates on the content of the information boards. It covers the characteristics of individual Bodenheim sites such as Burgweg, Hoch, or Silberberg, the specifics of the loess soils, the microclimates on the Rhine, and the history of viticulture in the community.
At several tasting stations along the trail, Bodenheim vintners will be pouring their wines. Ideally, the wines are directly related to the vineyard site the group is currently in: a wine from Burgweg when walking through Burgweg, a Riesling from Silberberg in Silberberg. This direct connection between wine and site is the central didactic and sensory idea of the event.
The hike is moderately demanding and manageable for participants with average fitness. Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. In September, the group usually enjoys mild late summer weather, wide views over the Rhine floodplain, and the spectacle of full ripeness in the vineyards.
The wine tasting on the Wine Trail is aimed at wine lovers, amateur oenologists, and curious connoisseurs who want to experience Rheinhessen wine culture beyond the glass. The number of participants is limited; advance registration is required.
The 2026 edition follows the proven concept: a guided hike with explanations on vineyard sites, grape varieties, and geology, tasting stations with Bodenheim wines directly related to the respective site.
The exact program and the list of wines to be served in 2026 will be published by the municipality of Bodenheim in late summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
