Three days of wine culture with vintners from German growing regions, music, art, and culture in Buxtehude's Old Town
Wine festivals are rare in Northern Germany – unlike in the classic wine-growing regions of Southern and Central Germany. This is precisely what makes the Weinfest Buxtehude special. It brings vintners from Rheingau, Pfalz, Mosel, and Saale-Unstrut to Buxtehude, creating a rare encounter between Northern German festival culture and Southern German wine tradition.
The wine festival spans three central squares in Buxtehude's Old Town. St.-Petri-Platz, in front of St. Petri Church, is one of the most atmospheric festival locations. Stavenort, a historic Buxtehude street, offers a different festival character. Rathausplatz, in front of the historic town hall, completes the festival circuit. This decentralization allows visitors to move through the Old Town and experience different atmospheres.
The Altstadtverein Buxtehude e.V. is a key player in the Hanseatic city, bringing together committed citizens, traders, and cultural practitioners with the goal of revitalizing Buxtehude's Old Town. Alongside the Oktoberfest and the Fairy Tale Days, the wine festival is one of the highlights organized by the association.
At the vintners' stands, visitors can taste and purchase various wines directly from the producers. Riesling, Spätburgunder, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder, and Weißburgunder are presented in diverse variations. The vintners offer personal advice, sharing stories about their wineries and cultivation methods — an experience not possible in this form at Northern German supermarkets.
The accompanying program includes live music at the various festival locations — from jazz trios and singer-songwriters to classical ensembles. Readings, art installations, and activities by local cultural creators complement the sensory offerings. Thus, the wine festival is not just a drinking festival, but a cultural celebration.
The distribution across St.-Petri-Platz, Stavenort, and Rathausplatz makes the wine festival a festive stroll through the Old Town.
The exact list of vintners and the music program will be published by the Altstadtverein in the summer of 2026.
