The Westerwald Open-Air Museum

The Westerwald Open-Air Museum in Hachenburg is one of the important open-air museums in Rhineland-Palatinate. On an extensive grounds, it gathers faithfully reconstructed Westerwald houses, farms, workshops, and utility buildings from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Visitors can immerse themselves in the lives of Westerwald ancestors — from simple day laborer houses to stately farmsteads.

Washing Day as a Reality of Life

Before washing machines revolutionized households, the weekly or bi-weekly washing day was a major event. It took a whole day, was physically demanding, and required careful planning. Water was fetched from the well or drawn from the stream, heated in a copper kettle over a wood fire, the laundry soaked in the wash tub with homemade soft soap, scrubbed with a washboard, rinsed, wrung out, and dried on the clothesline. In winter, shirts would freeze stiff outside the door — a sight that younger generations can hardly imagine.

Live Demonstration

At the museum festival 'Westerwälder Waschtag', this complete process is authentically recreated. Museum staff in historical costumes wash as in Grandma's time — complete with kettle, soft soap, washboard, and clothesline. They explain the work steps, answer questions, and thus provide a vivid picture of rural domestic life in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Family Program

The museum festival is extremely family-friendly. Children can join in — scrubbing on the washboard, hanging laundry, trying out brushes. This creates a direct, sensory access to history that goes far beyond mere observation. For the little ones, it's often the first time they see what was behind such a simple word as 'washing' in the past.
