Kuckuckskerwe Wernersberg from May 8th to 11th, 2026 — traditional Palatinate Kerwe in the Trifelsland on the second May weekend
Wernersberg is a small municipality in the Palatinate Forest, in the Annweiler am Trifels municipal association. The region is known as “Trifelsland” — characterized by the Reichsburg Trifels, which was the repository of the Imperial Regalia of the Holy Roman Empire in the High Middle Ages and where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. The hilly, wooded landscape with its red sandstone rocks shapes the scenery — Wernersberg is part of this scenically attractive region.
Like other Palatinate villages, Wernersberg has its own Kerwe with its own name — the “Kuckuckskerwe”. These names are not coincidental but are often historically justified or refer to local peculiarities. The cuckoo as a spring bird fits the Kerwe's May timing and makes the name memorable.
The Kuckuckskerwe runs from Friday, May 8th to Monday, May 11th, 2026 — four days of festivities. The four-day structure (Fri–Mon) is a classic Palatinate Kerwe format. Friday brings the opening with barrel tapping. Saturday is the main festival day with full operation and a stage program in the evening. Sunday is family day with a festive church service, Frühschoppen (morning pint), and family program. Monday is the final day, often with a Kerwe burial.
The festival tent features beer service, Palatinate specialties (Saumagen, Bratwurst, Flammkuchen, Pfälzer Wurstsalat), wine from regional wineries, and stalls from local associations. The Palatinate Kerwe is always also a festival for associations — the fire department, sports club, singing club, and rural youth present themselves, collect donations, and strengthen community cohesion in the village.
On the same weekend (May 8th–11th, 2026), other Palatinate Kerwen take place — the Amselkerwe in Knöringen is one of them. This concentration of Kerwen on the second May weekend is typical for the Palatinate festival season: the weather is usually reliably spring-like, the first Palatinate wines from the previous year are ready, and the associations have time between spring and summer commitments.
The Kerwe follows the classic Palatinate four-day pattern. Wernersberg in the Trifelsland is part of the scenically attractive Palatinate Forest region — the Kerwe is both a village festival and a tourist attraction.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in advance. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
