East Frisian Festival Culture
Werdum provides a good example of how even smaller communities maintain a vibrant festival culture. Getting There
Werdum can be reached via the L 6 and L 808 roads. Parking is available on the outskirts of the village. For holidaymakers from Wangerland and Neuharlingersiel, arriving by bike is an attractive option.
Werdum Celebrates on the Street
Werdum, located between the North Sea resorts of Neuharlingersiel and Bensersiel, is a classic marsh village with a church, mill, traditional East Frisian residential buildings, and tourist infrastructure. Once a year, the village center is closed to traffic and transformed into a festival mile: The Werdum Street Festival is one of the village's most important community events.
Market Stalls, Associations, and Gastronomy
The stalls at the street festival are mainly run by Werdum associations, local retailers, and restaurateurs. The range includes East Frisian culinary specialties like fish, Mettwurst (a type of German sausage), and cakes, as well as arts and crafts, flea market items, and activities for children. The associations use the day to present their work and attract new members – a typical cross-section of East Frisian club life.
Family Program in Summer
With its date on the first Sunday in August, the street festival falls right in the middle of the summer holidays. Families from the Wangerland and the Esens municipality come by bike or on foot and spend the whole day in Werdum. For children, there are small hands-on activities, often a bouncy castle, and movement-based offerings; the manageable size of the festival allows parents to briefly take their eyes off their children without worry.
A Community Shows Itself
The street festival is more than just a day's program: It is the stage on which the community of Werdum celebrates itself every year. Generations meet here, new neighbors are welcomed here, and here you can see that a small East Frisian community can indeed achieve great things.
