Trilateral Nature Festival at the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Dike Breakfast and Mudflat Hike on June 27, 2026
The Wadden Sea was recognized as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 2009 – as one of the world's most important habitats and the largest contiguous mudflat area on Earth. Every year at the end of June, this status is celebrated with the World Heritage Birthday, a trilateral initiative by the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. Thousands of people along the entire Wadden Sea coast participate in mudflat hikes, dike breakfasts, concerts, lectures, and nature experiences.
The 2026 World Heritage Birthday coincides with a second anniversary: the 40th anniversary of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. This makes 2026 a special year – with an expanded program and a conscious double anniversary character. In Wilhelmshaven, one of the Wadden Sea metropolises, the festival is at the center of an annual program with special activities.
The centerpiece of the Wilhelmshaven World Heritage Birthday celebration is the Dike Breakfast. On Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM, a regional breakfast buffet will be served on the dike directly by the Wadden Sea – East Frisian specialties, bread from the local bakery, regional cheese, tea, and coffee with a view of the mudflats. An event that makes the UNESCO World Heritage site tangible right from the breakfast table.
Immediately following, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, a guided mudflat hike will take place. Experienced National Park guides will lead participants into the mudflats, explain the ecosystem, show mud snails, shore crabs, mussels, and birds, and convey why this habitat is unique worldwide. Sturdy footwear or mudflat socks are recommended.
Parallel to the Wilhelmshaven event, World Heritage activities will take place in the Netherlands, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, and Denmark – an expression of cross-border cooperation on the Wadden Sea. Additionally, the National Park Administration will offer free guided tours and mudflat hikes for locals in this anniversary year – a gift to the region's residents.
The 2026 double anniversary is being used as an occasion to expand the World Heritage Birthday program. In addition to the Dike Breakfast, regional nature events, lectures, and special guided tours are planned.
Wilhelmshaven, as the only major city directly on the Wadden Sea, is one of the symbolic locations of the World Heritage site.
In 2009, the Wadden Sea was recognized as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. The Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park was established in 1986 and celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026.
