Four weekends of wine and hiking along the Rotweinwanderweg between Dernau and Altenahr
Weinherbst Mittelahr is the autumn counterpart to Weinfrühling Mittelahr (Mittelahr Spring Wine Festival) and follows a similar logic: instead of a one-day festival, the format spans several weekends and multiple villages. From the last weekend in September until the end of October, winegrower and gastronomy stands open every weekend along the Rotweinwanderweg between Dernau and Altenahr. The public holiday on October 3rd is also a program day.
The Rotweinwanderweg is one of Germany's most famous long-distance hiking trails. Over approximately 15 kilometers, it connects the four wine villages of Dernau, Rech, Mayschoß, and Altenahr through some of the region's most spectacular steep vineyards. During Weinherbst, the trail becomes a culinary route: winemakers offer their freshly tasted vintages and the first new wines of the current harvest at several viewpoints and in the village centers.
Weinherbst begins simultaneously with the Winzerfest Dernau, which kicks off on the last weekend of September. In October, the Mayschosser Weinfest joins in, running parallel for four weekends. This way, the entire Mittelahr valley merges into a continuous festival month, where hiking, wine tourism, and winegrower conviviality intertwine.
Like Weinfrühling Mittelahr before it, Weinherbst is a consciously chosen format that supports the valley's tourist revival following the 2021 flood disaster. Zukunft Mittelahr AöR coordinates the activities of the four municipalities and ensures a unified program and signage system.
The format combines hiking and wine tasting and is attractive for both day-trippers from the Rhineland and multi-day guests. Overnight stays in the four Mittelahr villages can be combined with the Weinherbst program.
The detailed program for each event weekend will be published in advance by Zukunft Mittelahr AöR.
