Wine festival, art, and Mittelrhein-Lichter fireworks display along the Bacharach Rhine promenade – with Bacchus as host
The Weinfest-Sommernacht Bacharach is one of the most renowned wine festivals on the Middle Rhine and, together with the Mittelrhein-Lichter fireworks display, forms a unique combination of wine culture, art, and pyrotechnics. It traditionally takes place on the Saturday of the fourth weekend in August, when the entire town dedicates itself to the summer night.
The venue is the Rheinanlagen – the park-like promenade between the historic town center and the river. Here, renowned winemakers from the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rheingau, and neighboring Rheinhessen set up their stalls and present their wines: slate Rieslings with the characteristic minerality of the Middle Rhine, fresh sparkling wines from traditional bottle fermentation, Pinot Noir, and Rosés. Restaurateurs from the region also showcase culinary specialties: from Rhenish Sauerbraten to Flammkuchen, Quiche, game dishes, and modern variations of Rhenish classics.
Bacchus, the ancient god of wine, takes on the symbolic role of host. Dressed in elaborate costume, he roams the festival grounds with his retinue, welcomes guests, gives short speeches, and creates a theatrical and playful atmosphere. Several art installations complement the program: sculptures, light installations, and performance pieces by regional artists animate the public space along the Rhine promenade.
Live music is performed on several stages: acoustic sets in the early evening, jazz and swing for dinner, pop, rock, and soul as the night progresses. The combination of music, wine, and the flowing Rhine in the background creates an atmosphere that takes the term 'summer night' quite literally.
The highlight of the evening is the Mittelrhein-Lichter fireworks display. Choreographed pyrotechnics rise into the night sky from a ship anchored slowly in front of Bacharach, reflecting in the waters of the Rhine. Against the backdrop of Stahleck Castle, perched high above the town, it creates an image of extraordinary beauty – a highlight of any Middle Rhine journey.
The Weinfest-Sommernacht is part of the Mittelrhein-Lichter series, which stages the interplay of wine, fireworks, and romantic river landscapes at various locations in the Middle Rhine Valley.
