About Wein im Weinberg

On May 14, 2026, the Ruwer-Riesling association invites you to the wine hike 'Wein im Weinberg' between the wine villages of Kasel and Waldrach in the Ruwer Valley. From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., hikers can walk along a signposted route through the steep slopes and sample wines from participating vintners at several stations. The Ruwer is one of the smallest but qualitatively outstanding Riesling regions in the world – with fine, mineral-driven wines from the Devonian slate slopes. The event combines hiking, enjoyment, and a landscape experience and is a firm fixture in the annual event calendar of the Ruwer-Riesling region.

The wine and hiking event „Wein im Weinberg“ is one of the most characteristic formats of the association Ruwer-Riesling e.V., which represents the vintners and wine culture of the small but renowned Ruwer Valley. On May 14, 2026, the event will take place between the wine villages of Kasel and Waldrach – two of the most important wine villages in the region, each with its own distinct profile and renowned family wineries.

From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., visitors will walk along a signposted route through the steep slopes above the Ruwer. At several stations in the vineyards, participating vintners will be pouring their wines – focus: Ruwertal Riesling with the typical styles of the region, from Kabinett to Spätlese and Auslese, up to dry Große Gewächse. The location in the vineyards itself makes the difference from classic wine festivals: visitors come into direct contact with the terroir, the slate soil, and the vines.

The Ruwer is a small tributary of the Mosel that flows into it near Trier. Despite, or perhaps because of, its small size (around 200 hectares of vineyards), it is considered one of the most qualitatively outstanding Riesling regions worldwide – estates like Maximin Grünhaus, Karthäuserhof, or Karlsmühle have established the region's international reputation. The family businesses in Kasel, Waldrach, Mertesdorf, and Eitelsbach cultivate a fine, mineral-driven style with great aging potential.

The hike has no fixed starting point – you can start in either Kasel or Waldrach. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the steep slopes are demanding. A wine glass and corresponding tickets or tasting vouchers can usually be purchased on-site or via the association's website.

Wein im Weinberg — edition 2026

Participating vintners from the Ruwer-Riesling e.V. association will be pouring Rieslings and other wines at several stations along a signposted route in the steep slopes above the Ruwer. The event combines wine tasting with hiking in one of the world's most renowned Riesling regions. Start in Kasel or Waldrach. Sturdy footwear recommended. Tickets and glass deposit are handled on-site or via ruwer-riesling.de.

The 2026 edition continues the successful format of previous years. Early arrival is recommended, as Thursday (Ascension Day, either before or after Pentecost) typically sees high visitor numbers.
