Emden's oldest theatre company with a Low German spring series directed by Birgit Frerichs
Low German (Plattdeutsch) theatre has a long tradition in Northern Germany, dating back to the 19th century. In Emden, the Friesenbühne is the oldest and most influential proponent of this theatrical culture. The performances combine the regionally rooted Low German language with classic theatrical works of comedy, folk plays, and farces. Karl Bunje (1897–1985) is one of the best-known Low German playwrights, whose plays have been a standard repertoire for Northern German local theatres for decades.
The spring series, running from April 10 to May 2, 2026, features a sequence of performances of a classic by Karl Bunje from 1955. Birgit Frerichs, an experienced director at the Friesenbühne, is directing. Performances are scheduled for Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 PM, and Sundays at 4 PM.
Tickets are available through the online ticketing system Reservix. Alternatively, local advance sales are available at Kulturevents Emden in the city center (Alter Markt 2A). Due to limited seating and high demand from club members and loyal patrons, early booking is recommended.
For autumn 2026, the Friesenbühne plans the premiere of a new play, likely in October or November. A world premiere of a Low German adaptation by bestselling author Ferdinand von Schirach is also on the season's calendar. Current information on plays, showtimes, and ticket availability can be found on the website friesenbuehne.de.
The Friesenbühne continues its successful performance model: multi-week series with a high density of performances, where a play is shown daily or several times a week over approximately three to four weeks. This concentration allows for intensive ensemble work and fosters a stable core audience.
The 1955 Karl Bunje classic is a typical repertoire piece: a comedy or folk play characterized by the Low German language and the Northern German way of life. Birgit Frerichs' production follows the tradition of the Friesenbühne's established staging.
The program for the 2026 spring series is confirmed via the Friesenbühne website and external platforms:
