Advent market in front of the historic ship lift in Niederfinow on December 5, 2026
There are Christmas markets with church towers in the background, in front of castles, and on historic market squares—and then there is the Christmas market at the Niederfinow Ship Lift. The setting is unique: the old ship lift from 1934, a gray steel behemoth 60 meters high, used to overcome a height difference of up to 36 meters between the Oderbruch and the higher Finow Canal. In front of it—in the parking lot and outdoor area—a small, charming Advent market unfolds on December 5, 2026.
The program is deliberately kept manageable: Christmas music from loudspeakers and occasionally live, stalls with mulled wine, hot non-alcoholic drinks, bratwurst, gingerbread, and small gift items. Those who come, come not for the largest possible spectacle of stalls, but for the unique atmosphere: industrial monument, wide views over the Oderbruch, and the heavy steel girders of the ship lift in the background in the depths.
For children, the highlight is the visit from St. Nicholas, who traditionally makes an appearance in Niederfinow during Advent. With his white beard, red coat, and full sack, he wanders through the market, listens to the children's wishes, and distributes small gifts—a simple but wonderful piece of tradition.
The old Niederfinow Ship Lift is a technical monument of international importance. Commissioned in 1934, it was in operation until 2022, when it was replaced by the new Niederfinow Nord Ship Lift. Both facilities stand side-by-side today and can be visited during the day—the old lift is an industrial monument, the new one is one of the most modern ship lifts in Europe. In December, the information center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., making a visit to the Christmas market an ideal combination with a ship lift tour.
Niederfinow, with barely 700 inhabitants, is one of Brandenburg's smallest municipalities. It is located on the eastern edge of the Barnim district on the Finow Canal—Germany's oldest artificial waterway (opened in 1746). The ship lift is the most important point between Berlin and the Baltic Sea, and has been increasingly developed for tourism in recent decades. The Christmas market is a good occasion to visit this extraordinary cultural landscape on a dark, perhaps snowy winter day.
On December 5, 2026, the parking lot and outdoor area of the Niederfinow Ship Lift will transform into a small, charming Advent market. Christmas music, mulled wine, bratwurst, and gingerbread create the classic market atmosphere — the unique backdrop makes the difference: the steel monument of the old ship lift in the background, next to it the modern facility from 2022.
Anyone interested can combine their market visit with a tour of the information center (open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in December) and experience the ship lift up close.
Admission to the market is free. Food and drinks at the stalls at usual festival prices. Information center visit during regular opening hours.
