Classic Gifhorn Christmas Market in the historic city center
The Gifhorn Christmas Market utilizes the historic backdrop of the city center around the market square and the old town hall. The half-timbered architecture, the streets decorated with fairy lights, and the central role of the market for the pre-Christmas life of the district town give the market a familiar, warm-bourgeois character. Unlike the large mass Christmas markets of the metropolises, the Gifhorn market is manageable, close to the citizens, and focused on the essentials.
At the wooden huts, visitors will find the classic assortment of North German Christmas markets: mulled wine in various variations, candied almonds, quark balls, potato pancakes, bratwurst, crepes, gingerbread, stollen, and winter sweets. The gastronomic offerings are supplemented by stalls with Christmas decorations, handicrafts, jewelry, wood carvings, candles, and gift items.
A varied supporting program brings life to the market: stage performances by regional choirs and music groups, Advent singing for families, performances by kindergarten groups and school choirs, occasional visits from St. Nicholas with gifts for children. The program is particularly dense on Advent Saturdays. Shops open on Advent Sundays attract additional visitors.
The town of Gifhorn offers several Advent activities side-by-side in the pre-Christmas season: the classic Christmas market in the city center and the atmospheric Mill Christmas at the International Mill Museum. Both complement each other and together form a diverse pre-Christmas program that attracts families from the entire region.
The market is open daily from the first Advent weekend until Christmas Eve (closed on Christmas holidays). The number of huts varies depending on the day of the week; the market is most fully occupied on weekends. The selection ranges from classic Christmas market gastronomy to handicrafts and gift ideas.
An essential element is the stage program on Advent Saturdays. Regional choirs, school classes, kindergarten groups, and music groups perform, creating the typical communal atmosphere of North German city center Christmas markets. Shops open on Advent Sundays complement the offerings.
