Overview

The "Weihnachtlicher Gänsemarkt" 2025 was open from November 20 to December 23 around the Lessing monument. Gingerbread stalls, illuminated geese with hourly flapping wings, roast suckling pig, mulled wine, and literary accents. Five weeks of Hamburg's Christmas season in one of the most distinctive squares in the city center.

The 2025 edition had almost the same duration as the one planned for 2026: mid/late November until the eve of Christmas Eve. The gingerbread village around the Lessing monument was well attended on all weekends; even during the week, office workers from the nearby city center filled the mulled wine stands after work.

Hamburg residents appreciate the Gänsemarkt as a smaller, more personal market compared to the large Historic Christmas Market in front of the City Hall. The gingerbread-shaped stalls and the hourly animation of the illuminated geese have become trademarks over the years. The North German roast suckling pig roll — unusual for a Christmas market, but typically Hamburg — found its fans as always.
