A Christmas Market with Character
While many city center Christmas markets are becoming indistinguishable from one another — same stall structures, same assortment, same atmosphere — the Warendorfer Weihnachtswäldchen has retained its unique character: real fir trees instead of artificial decorations, a curated selection of over 20 craftspeople instead of interchangeable mass-produced goods, and an atmosphere that consciously integrates the historic half-timbered old town of the Westphalian horse city. Those looking for a quieter, more compact Christmas market amidst the Advent rush should head to Warendorf — the journey from Münster takes less than 30 minutes.
24 Days for the First Time in 2026
An exciting new development: The Weihnachtswäldchen will be extended by one week in 2026, running for 24 days from late November to mid-December for the first time. The extension is a response to high visitor numbers and the wishes of the exhibitors. Exact start and end dates will be announced by the city in late summer; the 2025 edition (November 28 – December 14, 2025) serves as a guide.
Over 20 Craftspeople — A Curated Selection
What makes the market special is the curated selection of exhibitors: ceramicists, woodcarvers, jewelry designers, felt artists, leatherworkers, glassblowers — many from the Münsterland and Westphalia, some from Northern Germany. In addition, there are regional restaurateurs offering Westphalian specialties, mulled wine variations, cakes, bratwurst, and vegetarian options. Mass-produced imported goods are excluded.
The Christmas Locomotive — Children's Dreams
A special highlight for families: the nostalgic Christmas locomotive that travels through the old town, offering free rides or rides for a small donation for children. An attraction that has been a hallmark for years and connects generations.
Night Watchman Tours and Town Hall Brass Band
The city of Warendorf uses the Weihnachtswäldchen for atmospheric city tours: Night watchman tours in historical costumes lead through the decorated old town, recounting the city's history. The Town Hall Brass Band provides the auditory backdrop to the market atmosphere with traditional brass music from the town hall balcony.
Warendorf — The Westphalian Horse City
Warendorf, about 30 km east of Münster, is home to the Westphalian Studbook and the National Performance Centre for Equestrian Sports — the city of the horse par excellence. But beyond that, it boasts an exceptionally well-preserved half-timbered old town with cobblestone alleys, picturesque squares, and the imposing St. Mary's Church. This setting is the secret star of the Weihnachtswäldchen — strolling here under the strung fairy lights between fir trees and half-timbered facades makes you briefly forget which century you are in.
