Four days of Palatinate Kerwe in Leimen at the end of August with catering, dancing, and Kerweredd
The Kerwe (Kirchweih) is one of the central folk festivals of the Palatinate. Originally a commemoration of the consecration day of the village church, the Kerwe has developed into a multi-day folk festival that mobilizes the entire village community. Most Palatinate Kerwen follow a similar dramaturgy: opening on Friday, main festival day with dancing on Saturday, Frühschoppen and Kerwe parade on Sunday, and a convivial closing on Monday. The Leimer Kerwe follows this classic structure and is a prime example of Palatinate festival culture.
The heart of every Palatinate Kerwe is the Kerweredd – the humorously mocking festival speech, usually held in the Palatinate dialect, in which the events of the past village year are satirized: the mayor, club chairmen, mishaps, scandals, romances – nothing is safe from the sharp, often biting wit of the Kerweredder. The Kerweredd is both tradition and corrective, a custom unique in this form, which is found nowhere else in the Palatinate.
Like all Palatinate Kerwen, the Leimer Kerwe is supported by the local clubs. Fire brigade, sports club, music club, Kerwe youth – everyone has their task, their tent, their catering shift. The proceeds flow back into the club's activities and ensure the financing of club equipment, youth work, and talent promotion.
The culinary side follows Palatinate tradition: Saumagen (pig's stomach stuffed with pork, bread, and spices), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Flammkuchen (a thin tart with cream, onions, and bacon), Wurstsalat (sausage salad). Served with draft beer, Palatinate wine, Schorle (wine mixed with sparkling water). Saturday evening is dedicated to dancing, a cover band or dance orchestra plays, and the dance floor fills up – from young to old.
Leimen is located in the Gräfensteiner Land, the part of the Palatinate between Pirmasens and the Pfälzerwald (Palatinate Forest), which derives its name from the medieval Gräfenstein Castle in Merzalben. The region cultivates a distinct festival culture, and the Leimer Kerwe is its site-specific highlight.
The Kerwe is organized by the local municipality of Leimen with the local clubs. Current program details can be found in the pfalz.de event calendar.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in early summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
