About Chess Tournament Wangerooge

The Wangerooge Chess Tournament is one of the most traditional open chess tournaments on the German North Sea coast. From August 2nd to 7th, 2026, the chess community – hobby players and professionals alike – will gather for the 44th edition on the car-free North Sea island of Wangerooge. For a week, games will be played in a relaxed atmosphere, acquaintances renewed, and the unusual setting enjoyed: island in the morning, chess at the board in the afternoon and evening, with beach, dunes, and sea air in between. The tournament is organized by the chess club Schachdrachen in cooperation with the Wangerooge spa administration.

Chess with Island Flair

Few chess tournaments offer a comparable backdrop: Wangerooge, the easternmost of the inhabited East Frisian Islands, car-free, with wide beaches, the characteristic West Tower, and a relaxed island lifestyle. Since the 1980s, an international chess community has gathered here in the first week of August to play tournament games without the strictness of a classic hotel tournament.

Format and Playing Strength

The Wangerooge Chess Tournament is designed as an open tournament: beginners with an initial DWZ rating are just as welcome as titled players. The pairing software ensures fair matches, and the arbiters maintain the high sporting standard. Games are played in the Swiss system over several rounds, with classical time control – fast chess is not the measure here.

Island Life Between Rounds

During the tournament week, there is plenty of time to explore the island. The beach promenade, bird watching in the salt marshes, climbing the West Tower, cycling tours, or mudflat walks – Wangerooge offers the full East Frisian program. Many families combine tournament participation with an island holiday, so accompanying persons and children have their own program.

Schachdrachen as Organizer

The chess club Schachdrachen has been coordinating the tournament for many years, ensuring the continuity that characterizes the format. The cooperation with the Wangerooge spa administration ensures the playing hall, logistics, and supporting program.

Getting to the Island

Wangerooge can be reached by ferry and island railway from the mainland. Car traffic is generally prohibited on the island; luggage is transported. Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to comfortable hotels and holiday apartments.

Chess Tournament Wangerooge — edition 2026

The 44th edition of the Wangerooge Chess Tournament will be held from August 2nd to 7th, 2026, on the North Sea island. Over six playing days, games will be played in the Swiss system with classical time control. The mix of sporting seriousness and relaxed island atmosphere has made the tournament a secret tip of the North German chess scene for decades. Registration via Schachdrachen and the Wangerooge spa administration; the exact playing schedule will be published soon.

As in previous years, the tournament offers an accompanying island program in addition to chess. Mornings are often free for personal activities, with the main rounds played in the afternoon and early evening. A casual atmosphere and interaction between players of different skill levels are integral components.

Whether for the premiere or as a returning participant – the Wangerooge Chess Tournament is a format that accompanies many players over the years and has a firm place in the island summer.
