Sustainable New Year's Eve Alternative on the Frisian North Sea Coast
With the Wangerland Dike Lights, the municipality of Wangerland established a New Year's Eve concept in 2022 that consciously focuses on the beauty of the North Sea landscape, the protection of the Wadden Sea, and shared experience. At midnight, the dike line between Horumersiel, Schillig, and Hooksiel transforms into an approximately 30-kilometer-long ribbon of light – powered by thousands of oil lamps, wax torches, lanterns, and LED garlands brought by residents and guests.
The Lower Saxony Wadden Sea has been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site since 2009 and is one of Europe's most ecologically valuable coastal landscapes. Loud fireworks, fine dust, and flying rocket debris significantly burden the birds and the sensitive salt marshes. For this reason, a strict ban on firecrackers is in place on the dike and in the 50-meter zone behind it. The Dike Lights responds to this restriction with a positive counter-model: luminous instead of loud, together instead of alone.
As the evening progresses, the lights form a glowing arc along the coast. Families stand shoulder to shoulder with holidaymakers from all over Germany, Low German mixes with other dialects, and the view extends across the dark North Sea to the islands on the horizon. The atmosphere is focused and festive – a moment of reflection beyond the hectic New Year's Eve routine.
Wangerland Touristik GmbH coordinates the event, provides recommendations for safe light sources, and informs about the designated areas. Bring warm clothing, sturdy footwear, and a safe light source. Those who wish to avoid open flames can use electric headlamps or LED light chains.
The municipality of Wangerland, with its districts of Horumersiel, Schillig, Hooksiel, and Hohenkirchen, is located in the Friesland district between Wilhelmshaven and Carolinensiel. With its vast beaches, salt marshes, and mudflats, it is one of the most visited holiday regions on the Lower Saxony North Sea coast.
The fifth edition of the Dike Lights continues the concept of previous years: a silent, communal light installation along the coast, a strict fireworks ban on the dike and in the 50-meter strip behind it, with a focus on protecting Watt birds and salt marshes.
The lights will be lit precisely at midnight, creating an image that has garnered attention far beyond the region in previous years. Those looking for a particularly beautiful vantage point will find it around the beach access points in Schillig and Horumersiel, as well as on the dike in Hooksiel.
