Köhlerplatz — a piece of forest history

The Köhlerplatz near Erfweiler is a reminder of the old tradition of charcoal burning in the Pfälzerwald. For generations, charcoal burners processed beech wood here into charcoal, which was indispensable for the regional industry and daily life. Today, the place is a popular local recreation area and forms the backdrop for the Waldweihnacht.

Advent market in nature

Unlike city center Christmas markets, the Waldweihnacht takes place entirely outdoors — nestled in the dark mixed forest of the Pfälzerwald. Campfires, torches, and illuminated huts provide light and warmth. The mulled wine steams, the bratwurst sizzles over an open fire, and the smell of wood smoke mixes with Christmas aromas.

Tourist Association and village community

The Erfweiler Tourist Association organizes the Waldweihnacht together with other associations and the village community. The proceeds from the stalls benefit the association's work and the maintenance of the Köhlerplatz. Many volunteers are committed to the two market days.

Visit from Santa Claus

A highlight for the children is Santa Claus's visit on Sunday afternoon. He brings small gifts, reads from the "Golden Book," and has a kind word for every child. In the glow of the huts and fires, this becomes an unforgettable experience.
