Traditional Waldseer Kerwe in the Sommerfesthalle with Bavarian Beer, Brass Music, Kerwebaum and Festival Service
The Waldseer Kerwe is one of the later Kerwen (church consecration festivals) in the Palatinate festival calendar and traditionally takes place on the third weekend of October. It thus marks the transition from the long Palatinate festival summer to autumn and forms a special date in the event year of the municipality of Waldsee.
The venue for the Kerwe is the Sommerfesthalle Waldsee, a central event building in the municipality, which also hosts the annual beer festival of ASV Waldsee. The hall offers enough space for a large marquee atmosphere with long tables, a stage, and a dance floor.
A central ritual of every Palatinate Kerwe is the raising of the Kerwebaum (festival tree). In Waldsee, this happens on Saturday evening at 7 PM: a tall, decorated tree is erected on the festival grounds in front of the Sommerfesthalle. The ritual is accompanied by live music and a humorous speech by the Kerweborscht (festival master of ceremonies) – a symbolic ceremony that officially ushers in the highlight of the Kerwe.
The Sunday of the Waldseer Kerwe begins at 10:30 AM with the festival service, which recalls the original religious character of the Kirchweih. This is followed by a Frühschoppen (morning pint), Palatinate lunch, and the traditional Kaffeeklatsch (coffee and cake) in the afternoon with cakes and pastries.
The Waldseer Kerwe is characterized by an unusual mix of Palatinate Kerwe tradition and Bavarian Wiesn atmosphere. Instead of classic Palatinate beer, Bavarian beer is served, and brass music – marches, polkas, waltzes – creates a hearty mood on stage. This Wiesn influence fits the October date and gives the Kerwe its own character within the otherwise very "Palatinate"-influenced festival calendar of the region.
Waldsee belongs to the Rheinauen collective municipality, along with Altrip and Otterstadt. With just under 6,000 inhabitants, the municipality is located between Speyer and Ludwigshafen, directly on the Rhine floodplain (Rheinaue). The Waldseer Kerwe is one of the central festival events of the municipality, alongside the beer festival in May.
The 2026 edition continues the unique mix of Palatinate Kerwe and Bavarian Wiesn atmosphere. The Sommerfesthalle becomes a festival tent for four days with long beer benches, a brass music stage, and exuberant festival culture. Families, club members, and guests from the Rheinauen collective municipality, Speyer, and Ludwigshafen are invited.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
