Traditional village festival of the Turnverein Buir 1954 e.V. at the Waldfestplatz Wiesenstraße — Saturday evening and Sunday in the Eifel
Buir is a district of the municipality of Nettersheim in the Euskirchen district. With around 350 inhabitants, it is one of the smaller Eifel villages situated between the North Eifel Nature Park and the Kalk Eifel plateau. The municipality of Nettersheim is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers — the Eifelsteig trail passes through the region, and the Naturzentrum Eifel (Eifel Nature Centre) in Nettersheim offers year-round programs. In Buir, village club life shapes everyday life: the fire department, the shooting club, and the Turnverein 1954 e.V. organize the most important festival dates of the year.
The Turnverein Buir 1954 e.V. was founded in 1954 and, along with the shooting club, is one of the main pillars of club life in the district. In addition to sports activities — gymnastics, fitness, walking, dancing — the annual Waldfest is one of the traditional club activities. It has been held for decades at its own festival grounds behind Wiesenstraße 12 and is a meeting point for the entire village community as well as for guests from the surrounding Eifel villages of Marmagen, Engelgau, Pesch, and Tondorf.
The festival grounds are located at the Waldfestplatz on Wiesenstraße 12 — a site maintained by the club itself at the edge of the forest, featuring a stage roof, connections for a festival tent, and several picnic tables under old trees. This location in the middle of the forest gives the festival its character: no big-city festival hustle and bustle, but a relaxed atmosphere under the trees, with the sounds of the forest as a natural backdrop.
The Buir Waldfest is a prime example of the small-scale, vibrant club culture of the North Eifel. While the large city festivals in the region (Volksfeste in Euskirchen, Bad Münstereifel, Mechernich) cater to mass tourism, the Buir Waldfest remains authentically village-like — the club's women have been baking the cakes themselves for generations, the men organize setup and catering, and the young members take care of childcare. The proceeds from the festival weekend go towards club operations and sports equipment for the youth groups.
Those who wish to combine the Waldfest with a hiking excursion will find ideal routes around Nettersheim: the Eifelsteig trail passes through the region, the Buirer Heckenpfad — a shorter thematic hiking trail — starts directly in the village, and the Naturzentrum Eifel in Nettersheim is only 6 km away. The Römerkanal-Wanderweg (Roman Canal Trail) also passes through the municipality.
By car via the A 1 (exit Blankenheim) or the B 51 — parking available around the Waldfestplatz and in the village streets, limited during festival times. By public transport: Nettersheim train station on the Eifel line (RB 24 Cologne–Trier), from there bus line 829 or an on-demand taxi to Buir (registration required).
The 2026 edition of the Waldfest continues the decades-old tradition of the Turnverein Buir 1954 e.V. On Saturday evening, the festival opens with dancing, beer, and catering in the festival tent under the trees. On Sunday, the site transforms into a relaxed family day with homemade lunch and a cake buffet prepared by the club's women.
One of the characteristic club festivals of the North Eifel — small-scale, lively, authentically village-like. The club's fund benefits from the weekend, and the Buir village community gathers for a joint summer kickoff.
