Traditional marksmen's festival of the half-timbered town Hornburg with Z(w)eitreise concert and parade
Hornburg is one of the most beautiful half-timbered towns in Northern Germany and a district of the municipality of Schladen-Werla in the Wolfenbüttel district. The town looks back on a long tradition of marksmen, which culminates annually in the Volks- und Schützenfest. With a bus hall, parade, and proclamation of the king, the festival follows the classic structure of North German marksmen's festivals and integrates the entire town life for a long weekend.
Saturday evening is dedicated to the dance night. From 6 PM, the VB Bachstein bus hall fills up, and from the late evening hours, the band Z(w)eitreise from Wernigerode gets the hall moving. The sextet plays a mix of rock, pop, and Schlager hits from several decades – a repertoire that appeals equally to regular guests and younger audiences. Tickets cost €12 in advance and €15 at the door.
On Sunday morning, the traditional fanfare at 7 AM awakens the Hornburg marksmen. At 10:15 AM, the grand parade sets off – with marksmen's companies, music clubs, floats, and many spectators along Hornburg's half-timbered facades. Immediately afterwards, the marksmen's breakfast takes place in the bus hall (€20), before the new majesties – the marksmen's king, vice-king, and youth king – are proclaimed at 3:30 PM.
Hornburg's strength lies in its preserved old town with well over 380 half-timbered houses. The parade through this setting is one of the most picturesque marksmen's events in the region and a good reason to plan your weekend around the festival.
The Hornburg marksmen are sticking to their proven format: a festival concert with an established dance band on Saturday evening, and on Sunday, the classic marksmen's Sunday with a parade, breakfast, and proclamation. The dance night with Z(w)eitreise is usually in high demand during the advance sale.
The Wernigerode band is considered a reliable guarantee for dancing in the Harz region. Their repertoire covers rock, pop, and Schlager from several decades, making it ideally suited to the convivial atmosphere of a Schützenfest.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Hornburg Marksmen's Society in the spring. The structure follows the proven highlights of previous years.
