Overview

The Balderschwang Viehscheid 2025 took place in September, as every year. Around 220 head of cattle returned from the high alpine pastures after about 100 days of summer grazing. Hourly arrivals of herds at the village square, decorated lead cows, dairymaids and herdsmen in Allgäu traditional costume. Live music, Kässpatzen, sausages, homemade cakes by the Balderschwang women, bell raffle in the afternoon. Authentic customs in Germany's most remote mountain village.

Balderschwang 2025

In September 2025, the Balderschwang Viehscheid once again attracted hundreds of visitors to the small Allgäu mountain village. Approximately 220 head of cattle returned from the high alpine pastures around Balderschwang after more than 100 days of summer grazing. From 8:30 AM, herds arrived at the village square every hour, led by festively decorated lead cows with bell decorations.

Atmosphere and Specialties

The atmosphere was warm and cordial as always – without tourist spectacle, with the unbroken character of a farmers' festival. Dairymaids and herdsmen in Allgäu traditional costume accompanied the animals, live music accompanied the day, and the village clubs offered Allgäu specialties: Kässpatzen, Käsknöpfle, Allgäu mountain cheese bread, sausages from the charcoal grill. A special highlight once again was the homemade cakes by the Balderschwang women, as well as the bell raffle in the afternoon. The festival ended around 4 PM, and the animals were taken to their farms.
