Grand Veilchendienstagszug of the Sinzig Carnivalists through the Barbarossa City on the Rhine
While the Rose Monday parade dominates Carnival in many Rhenish strongholds, Sinzig upholds its own tradition: the Veilchendienstagszug on the day after Rose Monday. This peculiarity makes the Sinzig parade a valued destination for carnival enthusiasts seeking the full festive experience after the hustle and bustle of Rose Monday. The assembly at 2:11 PM reflects the close connection to Rhenish Carnival and the tradition of Cologne.
The parade consists of floats from local carnival clubs, costumed walking groups, dance groups, and music bands. The floats humorously and satirically address local, regional, and national themes. The clubs work on their creations throughout the year, made from papier-mâché, fabric, and wood, which roll in full splendor through Sinzig's city center on Shrove Tuesday. Members accompany the floats, throwing candy, bouquets, and small gifts into the cheering crowd.
The parade route leads through the historic city center of Sinzig, past the castle and the Romanesque parish church of St. Peter. The rows of houses and half-timbered facades provide an atmospheric backdrop for the festive activities. Families, carnival fans, and day-trippers crowd the roadside. Cafés and restaurants along the route open their doors to the celebrating guests, and there is brisk business at bratwurst and mulled wine stands.
Sinzig has a long carnival tradition, supported by several active carnival societies. Throughout the entire carnival season, gala sessions, costume balls, 'Kappensitzungen' (a type of carnival meeting), and proclamations of the city prince take place. The Veilchendienstagszug is the crowning finale of this season, uniting all local clubs in a joint appearance. Visiting clubs from the Ahr Valley, the Middle Rhine, and the Eifel enrich the parade with their own contributions.
Following the Ahr flood in July 2021, the carnival clubs in the Ahrweiler district have gained special symbolic significance. They represent reconstruction, joie de vivre, and the unbroken sense of community of the people in the valley. The Sinzig Veilchendienstagszug is part of a dense carnival program that keeps the entire Ahrweiler district buzzing during the carnival days and brings confidence to the region.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Route marshals, medical services, and traffic management ensure an orderly process. Families will find a good spot in the quieter sections of the route to catch candy ('Kamelle') and enjoy the colorful spectacle.
Arrival of participating clubs, setup of floats at the assembly point, final preparations by float crews and walking groups.
Welcome of the float builders by the Carnival Society, distribution of starting numbers, assembly in the designated order.
Opening of the parade by the parade leader, start of movement through the city center of Sinzig.
Parade through the main street and pedestrian zone, passing dense rows of spectators. Throwing of candy ('Kamelle'), bouquets ('Strüßjer'), and small toys into the crowd. Music bands play carnival hits and march music.
Dispersal of the parade at the end point, return of floats to clubhouses, start of carnival parties in the halls and restaurants of the city center.
Carnival parties with live music and DJ sets in local restaurants. Continuation of the festive activities until the traditional start of Ash Wednesday.
The detailed 2026 program will be published shortly before the date on the websites of the local carnival clubs.
