CHEKOV — the unoptimal location is an alternative cultural space at Strombad Cottbus, the former municipal swimming pool complex from the 1930s at Stromstraße 14. The designation "unoptimal" is programmatic: deliberately not a high-gloss club, but a place with a DIY character, small stages, an alternative sound concept, and a politically progressive self-image. The annual Unoptimal Festival is the venue's largest event.

Four Days, Two Stages Plus Two Special Formats

From Thursday, June 4th to Sunday, June 7th, 2026, the festival runs for four days. Event setup:

• Two main stages for live bands and DJ sets
• A floor by Kraftwerksonne (a friendly Cottbus DJ collective) for electronic dance music
• A performance stage by Galerie Fango for spoken word, small theatre pieces, and performance art

Thursday evening is the opening with a Quiz Lab as a social kickoff — a tradition that regularly takes place at CHEKOV.

Lineup — Between Electronic, Punk, and Alternative

The confirmed lineup mixes three genres in various constellations:

• S.3000 — electronic live acts with synthesizer rituals
• Die Toten Crackhuren im Kofferraum — Berlin-based electro-pop provocation, long-time scene figures
• Liser — Indie-Pop / Electronic with German lyrics
• SOKO LiNX — Punk / left-wing hardcore politics
• Dosenstolz — German Indie-Punk
• Gruppa Karl-Marx-Stadt — Chemnitz post-punk tradition (former name of the city: Karl-Marx-Stadt)
• TOTAL FRAUD — Punk / Alternative

Workshops, Talks, Street Food

In addition to the stage program, there are interactive workshops, talks, and info booths — a programmatic element that makes the politically progressive self-image visible. Typical topics: anti-discrimination, awareness, queer-feminist strategies, critical urban politics. Street Food will cater to visitors over the four days.

The name "Unoptimal" is programmatic: not a high-gloss festival, no commercial optimization, but deliberately DIY, small, and political. CHEKOV thus positions itself as a counter-model to the large commercial festivals in the region and as an anchor for an alternative scene in the Lausitz region. The geographical location in Cottbus — a city with a complex political past and present — reinforces this political claim.
