Day of the UNESCO World Heritage in the Ore Mountains Mining Region
The Ore Mountains / Krušnohoří Mining Region has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019. The transnational site comprises 22 components in Saxony and the Czech Republic and represents over 800 years of mining history. Schneeberg is one of the central World Heritage locations – the town stands for the silver ore mining of the Ore Mountains and for a mining culture that is still alive today with its own mine parades and musical traditions.
The UNESCO World Heritage Day is an event day for all UNESCO World Heritage sites in Germany. In 2026, Schneeberg will host the central World Heritage Festival for the Mining Region, consolidating program offerings that are otherwise spread throughout the region. The World Heritage Mile on the market square offers discoveries, tastings, hands-on activities, lectures, and demonstrations.
The program follows mining traditions: Tower brass music from the town hall tower, a first "Schneeberg Children's Mine Parade", a grand concert with three mining bands, and the presentation of the UNESCO World Heritage Youth Prize are the highlights. The event is free to attend.
Schneeberg is located in the Erzgebirgskreis district (AGS 14521), in the state of Saxony, at an altitude of around 470 meters on the western edge of the Ore Mountains. With its mine buildings, adits, and spoil heaps, the town is a showcase of mining industrial history. The World Heritage Day brings this history to the market square in a concentrated form for one day.
In 2026, Schneeberg will host the central events of the Mining Region as the focal point of the World Heritage Festival. The program follows a tight schedule: It begins at 10 a.m. with the opening of the World Heritage Mile, followed by the first performances starting at 11 a.m., and concludes at 6:30 p.m. with live music by local bands.
Admission is free. Families will find hands-on activity stations, adults can enjoy tastings and lectures, and music fans can experience three mining bands in a joint concert.
By car via the A72 (exit Hartenstein). By public transport via the Erzgebirgsbahn from Zwickau to Aue, then bus to Schneeberg.
Free admission to the World Heritage Mile and all program points on the market square.
Combine the World Heritage Day with a visit to the historic mining town – St. Wolfgang Church with the Cranach Altar and the Mining Museum are located directly on the market square.
