Interactive Summer Program 'Travel and Leisure in the Roman Era' at the Thermen am Viehmarkt from June 29 to July 3, 2026
The Thermen am Viehmarkt are one of the three major Roman bath complexes preserved in Trier – alongside the Kaiserthermen and Barbarathermen. In the modern glass roof designed by architect Oswald Mathias Ungers, the complex today presents itself as one of the city's most important archaeological showcases. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Trier.
The summer program from June 29 to July 3, 2026 focuses on a special aspect of Roman daily life: Travel and Leisure in the Roman Era. How did Roman citizens travel in the Roman Empire from Italy to Trier, from Trier to Cologne? What was Roman bathing culture like, which games were popular, how did people spend their free time? These and similar questions are answered at interactive stations, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and discussions.
The organizer is the Zentrum der Antike Trier, the consortium of Trier's World Heritage sites (Kaiserthermen, Amphitheater, Thermen am Viehmarkt, Porta Nigra, Igeler Säule). It is part of the Römer-Leben-Reihe (Roman Life Series), with which the Zentrum der Antike brings the abstract stones to life.
Admission to the program is included in the regular admission price. This makes it a particularly attractive format for families with children, who are playfully introduced to Roman culture, and for tourists who want to experience more than just a classic museum tour.
The 2026 edition is part of the Zentrum der Antike's Römer-Leben series. Various stations are spread across the site and can be visited in any order.
Interpreters in Roman costumes will accompany the program and answer questions.
The exact program for each day will be communicated in advance by the Zentrum der Antike Trier. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
