International Dance, Opera, and Theatre Festival of the Pfalzbau Bühnen featuring Grupo Corpo, La Bohème, Junior Ballet Paris, and Lacrima
The Pfalzbau Bühnen – the theatre in the Pfalzbau – is a four-discipline venue without a permanent ensemble, which invites guest performances from Germany and abroad. This fundamentally distinguishes it from most municipal theatres and allows for particularly flexible programming. The Theaterfrühling condenses this programming philosophy into a multi-month spring festival: instead of a single venue over several days, top productions from Brazil, France, Israel, Belgium, and Germany are shown in Ludwigshafen over more than three months.
The 2026 season offers an exceptionally dense selection. The opening act is Grupo Corpo from Belo Horizonte (March 13/14), one of Brazil's most important dance companies, with their characteristic blend of classical technique and Brazilian movement language. This is followed by Puccini's La Bohème (March 20–22) in a guest production, the choreography Momo by the world-renowned Compagnie Batsheva from Tel Aviv (March 28), the Junior Ballet of the Opéra national de Paris (April 11/12), and the Shakespeare theatre production Maß für Maß (Measure for Measure) (April 17/18). The festival finale highlight is Lacrima by French director Caroline Guiela Nguyen (June 5/6) – an award-winning production that garnered attention across Europe.
Like few other festivals in Southern Germany, the Theaterfrühling connects the four disciplines of dance, opera, musical theatre, and theatre in close dialogue. Between March and June, audiences experience a journey through diverse aesthetic worlds: earthy Brazilian physicality, the weightlessly classical style of the Junior Ballet, Batsheva's radical movement language, Italian opera tradition, and theatre that addresses current political conflict lines.
With its international ambition, the Theaterfrühling is an important asset for Ludwigshafen as a cultural hub. It attracts audiences from Mannheim, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, and the Palatinate, making the Theater im Pfalzbau a focal point for contemporary performing arts in the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region.
As every year, the Theaterfrühling is conceived as a cohesive programme framework: several productions are interconnected through lectures, introductions, and audience discussions. The exact start times and individual performances per production can be found on the current schedule at theater-im-pfalzbau.de.
