Free opening festival of the Cathedral Festival season with family program
For many years, the Theaterfest has been the traditional opening day of the Gandersheimer Domfestspiele. Before the premieres of the new season take place on the open-air stage in front of the collegiate church, the ensemble invites the audience, patrons, families from the region, and all theater enthusiasts to a big opening festival on the grounds around the collegiate church.
The Theaterfest offers exclusive insights into the upcoming 67th season, which will be under the motto "What if...". Actors and actresses will introduce themselves, and short preview scenes will give a taste of the productions Pinocchio, Come Together — The Great Beatles Show, The Eight Women, Hello Dolly!, and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Encounters with directing, stage design, costumes, and technology make the diversity of a theater production visible.
The Theaterfest is explicitly designed to be family-friendly. Children will find activities such as face painting stations, interactive theater, small workshops, and an accompanying program that ignites the theater spark even in the youngest visitors. Adults can explore the grounds at their leisure, visit stalls, and chat with theater people.
Snack stands, cafés, and drink vendors provide guests with food and drinks. Musical performances by regional bands and solo artists create the perfect atmosphere for a festive start to summer.
A central message of the Theaterfest: admission is free. With this, the Domfestspiele signal their openness to all population groups and especially invite those audiences who might otherwise not dare to step into classical theater. The Theaterfest is a low-threshold invitation to approach the world of theater.
The Theaterfest 2026 opens a special season for the Domfestspiele. With five productions, the special series "Fridays in the Tent," and the parallel Roswitha Festival Year in Bad Gandersheim, the 2026 season is particularly packed.
Those who visit the Theaterfest will experience a taste of the program and can simultaneously get to know the unique atmosphere of the historic collegiate church.
