Open-air theatre in the Bückeburg Palace Gardens – the Faust-Theater Hannover performs "The Servant of Two Masters" by Carlo Goldoni
Carlo Goldoni's "The Servant of Two Masters" is one of the most frequently performed comedies in Italian theatre. The story of the cunning Truffaldino, who enters into two employment contracts simultaneously and becomes entangled in increasingly absurd lies and mix-ups, is a masterclass in charm, improvisation, and the eternal question of how much truth a person can bear. Goldoni's sharp observation of the bourgeois society of his time remains highly relevant in the 21st century.
The Faust-Theater Hannover is an independent theatre ensemble specializing in classical and modern plays, regularly appearing with summer productions in unique locations. The staging in the Bückeburg Palace Gardens continues a series of open-air productions that consciously seek to connect theatre and landscape.
The production will be shown over four consecutive evenings from August 20th to 23rd, 2026. This compact performance schedule makes the production accessible to theatregoers from the entire Schaumburg region; at the same time, it allows for efficient organisation of logistics and technical resources. The performances usually take place in the early evening, allowing the audience to arrive in daylight and the performance to transition into the encroaching dusk.
The Bückeburg Palace Gardens are a historically developed landscape park surrounding the palace. Stands of tall trees, sightlines, and manicured lawns provide an atmospheric setting for the stage. Open-air theatre in the palace gardens is more than just moving a play outdoors: the natural acoustics, the light of the setting sun, and the play of shadows in the trees become part of the production.
The 2026 edition continues the format of open-air theatre in the Bückeburg Palace Gardens. With Goldoni's "The Servant of Two Masters," the Faust-Theater chooses a classic that has lost none of its impact since its premiere in 1746.
The Faust-Theater Hannover brings its professional experience with summer productions. The four performance evenings are scheduled to be accessible to visitors from neighbouring regions as well.
Carlo Goldoni's "The Servant of Two Masters" (Italian original: "Il servitore di due padroni") premiered in Venice in 1746. Truffaldino, a wily servant, takes on two masters simultaneously out of hunger and need for money – leading to disastrous mix-ups, letters falling into the wrong hands, meals he carries back and forth between the houses, and a love story that unfolds amidst the chaos. The play is considered a highlight of the Commedia dell'arte and is still performed in various productions today.
The exact programme for 2026, including performance start times, will be published by the city of Bückeburg and the Faust-Theater Hannover in the summer of 2026. Tickets will then be available for advance purchase.
