Thanksgiving Festival on German Unity Day with Federweißer, Zwiebelkuchen, and Roasted Suckling Pig
The Thanksgiving Festival at Weingut Udo Weber in Monzingen takes place every year on German Unity Day, October 3rd. The family winery uses the autumnal public holiday as an occasion to celebrate the end of the grape harvest and the tradition of Thanksgiving together with guests and regular customers. Regional products, fresh Federweißer (new wine) from the current harvest, Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart) from the wood-fired oven, and a suckling pig roasted for hours are the culinary highlights.
Monzingen is one of the historic wine villages of the Nahe region, located between Bad Sobernheim and Kirn in one of the most beautiful valley sections of the area. The Thanksgiving Festival combines Nahe wine culture with the rural festival culture of autumn, making Weingut Udo Weber a fixed destination for gourmets and wine lovers on October 3rd.
Thanksgiving is one of the oldest festivals in agricultural culture and traditionally marks the end of the harvest season. In wine-growing regions, it coincides with the completion of the grape harvest – an occasion for vintners to thank their customers and friends for their loyalty and to transition into autumn together. At Weingut Udo Weber, this custom is cherished with great dedication.
The culinary trio of the festival is classic and regionally rooted: Federweißer (new wine, semi-fermented, lightly sparkling) from the fresh harvest, Zwiebelkuchen from the wood-fired oven with a crispy crust and creamy onion-bacon filling, and a roasted suckling pig as a hearty main course. This is complemented by bread, salads, vegetarian alternatives, and the winery's current wines.
Weingut Udo Weber cultivates vineyards in one of the most historically significant wine-growing areas of the Nahe. Monzingen is home to the famous vineyard "Halenberg" – one of Germany's most renowned Riesling sites – and the "Frühlingsplätzchen" site. The family winery Weber practices honest, artisanal viticulture with a focus on Riesling and regularly participates in Wine Land Nahe initiatives.
Monzingen boasts a history of over 1,200 years and is one of the oldest and most beautiful wine villages on the Nahe. Worth seeing are the Romanesque parish church of St. Maria, the old town hall, and the historic half-timbered houses in the town center. Those who combine their festival visit with a walk can hike through the vineyards to the Halenberg and enjoy the view over the Nahe valley.
