Witten's Longest Table — Open-air dinner with live music in the city centre in July 2026
Tafelmusik is an extraordinary summer event by Stadtmarketing Witten GmbH: In the middle of Witten's city centre, an endless table is set up — table after table, chair after chair, stretching for several hundred metres. You reserve your spot or come spontaneously, bring your own picnic or order from participating restaurateurs — and end up dining under the open sky with hundreds of others.
What distinguishes Tafelmusik from a normal city festival is the live musical accompaniment. Several musical acts take turns, creating a relaxed yet lively atmosphere. Jazz trios, singer-songwriters, acoustic bands, or small classical ensembles — the spectrum varies from year to year. However, the music always remains *accompanying*, never dominant. You can comfortably chat with your table neighbours.
The basic idea: people don't come for a concert, but for the encounter at the table. You sit next to people you don't know — and that's exactly the intention. The format is inspired by French tablées and similar long-table formats that are popular in many European cities. With Tafelmusik, Witten celebrates the idea that a city can bring its residents together for informal conversation.
Tafelmusik takes place in Witten's city centre — typically in a central square or a main street closed to traffic. The exact route may vary depending on the edition. Stadtmarketing will communicate the exact format a few weeks before the date.
Witten is located in the southern Ruhr area on the edge of the Ennepe-Ruhr district, with around 96,000 inhabitants. The city is primarily known for the University of Witten/Herdecke — the oldest private university in Germany. This gives Witten a young, intellectual flair. The Ruhr Valley, with the Witten Days for New Chamber Music (a renowned classical festival), Hardenstein Castle, and the Ruhr Cycle Path route, makes Witten an underestimated travel destination in the southern Ruhr area.
