25 Years of Symphonic Walpurgis Night

With its 25th edition in 2026, the Symphonic Walpurgis Night looks back on an extraordinary tradition. Initiated 35 years ago by Dr. Heide Roch-Stübler, the thematic concert format has developed into one of the outstanding classical music events in Lower Saxony's cultural calendar. The concerts combine great symphonic works with the theme of Walpurgis Night — mysticism, folk legends, romantic nature poetry — thereby creating a unique concert experience that blends ancient customs with top-class classical music.

2026 Program — Grieg and Gade

The focus of the 2026 program is on two late Romantic works by Nordic composers:

• Edvard Grieg: 'Peer Gynt' — The famous suites for Henrik Ibsen's dramatic poem are among the best-known works in concert literature. With pieces like 'Morning Mood,' 'Åse's Death,' 'Anitra's Dance,' and 'In the Hall of the Mountain King,' Grieg unfolds a rich musical world where folk legend, nature poetry, and symphonic poetry merge.
• Niels W. Gade: 'Erlkönigs Tochter' — The rarely performed late Romantic work for soloists, choir, and orchestra (op. 30, 1854) is based on a Danish folk ballad and tells the tragic fate of a bridegroom seduced by the daughters of the Erlking. With its mystical atmosphere, folk-song-like themes, and rich soundscape, the work is perfectly suited for a Walpurgis Night program.
