Northern Germany's largest open-air jazz festival on Ascension Day with over 40,000 visitors and free admission
enercity Swinging Hannover has been held for decades every year on Ascension Day — Christi Himmelfahrt, traditionally a public holiday in Germany. The event has become a true Hannover pilgrimage destination: jazz lovers, families, students, and tourists gather at the Platz der Menschenrechte, which becomes a jubilant jazz stage for one day. With over 40,000 visitors per day, the festival is among the largest open-air jazz events in Europe — and it is accessible free of charge.
The festival's concept: multiple stages, a broad spectrum. The main stage in front of the New Town Hall features the day's biggest acts — international headliners, large big bands, renowned solo artists. Parallel performances take place on one or two side stages — smaller ensembles, local bands, newcomers, experimental acts. The genre spectrum ranges from classic swing and big band to gospel and soul, from modern jazz to funk and electro-swing. Thus, every taste finds its place.
The festival's star guest in 2026 is the American bassist and singer Nik West. Known for her collaborations with Prince, among others, she brings her energetic funk-rock-soul mix to the big stage. Those who experienced the intimate Jazz Night at the Schauspielhaus the evening before can experience her on a completely different scale on the festival day.
Admission to the festival has always been free — a conscious decision by the organizers and main sponsor enercity AG. The financing is borne by enercity AG as the main sponsor, along with other supporters, the City of Hannover, and Jazz Club Hannover. The festival sees itself as a contribution to cultural public services — jazz for everyone, without an admission barrier.
The Platz der Menschenrechte in front of the New Town Hall provides an extraordinary backdrop. Behind it lies the historic architecture of the Wilhelminian-era town hall, in view is the Maschpark, and all around are trees and lawns. Families spread out their blankets, students gather on the steps, and older visitors find seated areas. Food stalls offer international specialties, and bars serve beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic drinks.
Those who stay all day experience a colorful musical journey. Those who can only stop by for one or two hours can choose their favorite act and enjoy the moment. The open concept makes the festival flexible and compatible with all life situations. Those who come with children will find a family-friendly environment; those who arrive as a couple or with friends will find the right atmosphere for a long festival day.
