Traditional street wine festival of VfR Sulzthal in the Franconian Saale Valley
The Sulzthaler Straßenweinfest is the annual wine festival of the Lower Franconian wine-growing community of Sulzthal (Bad Kissingen district, Bavaria). The organizer is VfR 1927 Sulzthal, the local sports club with roots dating back to 1927, which has been hosting the festival as a convivial highlight of the summer in Sulzthal for decades. The venue is the historic market square with the Sulzthal fountain.
The concept is that of a classic Franconian street wine festival: stalls with wines from local vintners, regional specialties, beer, and spritzers line the main street. Regional music bands play on the stage at the market square – in previous years, these included the Steyrtaler Musikanten (Saturday evening), the solo entertainer Manni (Sunday), and the Sulzthaler Musikanten with Franconian brass music to round off the festival. The 2026 program will be announced by the VfR in early summer.
The highlight of the festival is the visit of the Franconian Wine Queen with her wine princesses. In past years, VfR board members Elmar Halbig and Joachim Eyrich welcomed the wine royalty Klara Zehnder with her princesses. This tradition underscores Sulzthal's deep roots in the Franconian Wine Kingdom tradition.
A Sulzthal festival tradition is the fountain visit: with a reference to the water temperature of the fountain (exactly nine degrees Celsius in a previous edition), the organizers liven up the festival – a humorous Sulzthal Kerwa (fair) program item that rounds off the festival.
Sulzthal is a community of around 1,300 inhabitants in the Lower Franconian Saale Valley, nestled between the region's vineyards. The Saale Valley is part of the Franconian wine-growing region and shapes the festival both culinarily and culturally – the wines come from the region, and the music reflects Lower Franconian customs.
As in previous years, VfR Sulzthal will host the street wine festival in 2026 on a weekend in July – the exact date and band program will be published in early summer 2026. In terms of content, the festival will feature wine from local vintners, Franconian specialties, and a stage program with brass music and pop music on the market square.
The Sulzthaler Straßenweinfest has been a central date in the VfR club calendar for years and an important social meeting point in the Saale Valley. The visit of the Franconian Wine Queen and the fountain visit are the ritualized highlights.
Detailed program and dates will be published by VfR Sulzthal in early summer 2026.
