Rheine — Central town in the western Münsterland
Rheine, with around 76,000 inhabitants, is the largest town in the Steinfurt district, located on the Ems river in the western Münsterland, near the Dutch border. Characterized by its textile industry history (spinning mills, weaving mills), it is now a central town with a vibrant city centre, the Falkenhof as its historic core, and one of the most densely packed event landscapes in Münsterland. The annual city festival "Straßenparty" is one of several monthly city festivals staged by the city marketing department.
The "Rheines Stadtfest" Concept
The Straßenparty differs from a classic Volksfest (public festival) through its focus on live music and its spatial concept: not one central festival ground, but five squares in the city centre serve as stages simultaneously — visitors stroll from square to square, each stage with its own music profile (from rock to pop, indie, jazz, and electro). The festival is also a city marketing initiative: shops are open on Sunday (Sunday shopping with "Heimat Shoppen"), and local gastronomy is represented with outdoor stalls.
2026 Program — Three Days, Five Squares, One Underpass
The kickoff on Friday, September 11th (6:00 PM–12:00 AM) will bring the stages to life for the first time — a joint opening moment, followed by concerts until midnight. Saturday, September 12th (3:00 PM–12:00 AM) is the main festival day with the densest program; from 10:00 PM, the "Rave in der Röhre" starts in the train station underpass, running until 3:00 AM — a format that extends the city festival into the electronic club scene and briefly makes Rheine the dance capital of Münsterland. Sunday, September 13th (2:00 PM–6:00 PM) features the Sunday shopping event, "Heimat Shoppen" (Shopping at Home), and a more relaxed closing program.
"Heimat Shoppen" — Focusing on Local Retail
The "Heimat Shoppen" initiative is a nationwide Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) campaign that strengthens stationary retail. In Rheine, it is integrated into the city festival: local boutiques, cafés, and restaurants present their autumn collections and specialties, often with special offers, free tastings, and small events outside their shops. The festival thus becomes the transition moment from summer to autumn in Rheine's city centre.
Anfachen Awards — Street Art at the Festival
The street art exhibition featuring works from the Anfachen Awards visually complements the festival. Anfachen is an initiative for young creatives in Münsterland, whose award-winning works are displayed in several locations in the city centre — a bridge between a pop festival and a cultural platform.
Free Admission — Sponsorship Model
The festival is free to access, made possible by the "Von Rheine für Rheine" (From Rheine for Rheine) sponsorship concept: local companies, public utilities, the savings bank, and retailers finance it. This keeps the festival accessible and equally attractive to families, young people, and seniors.
Rheine as a Day Trip Destination
Before or after the festival, worth visiting stops include: Naturzoo Rheine, a family-friendly zoo; Kloster Bentlage with its monastery complex and museum; the Falkenhof Museum in the city centre; and the Ems Cycle Path for day tours. Those staying longer can venture into the western Münsterland (Ochtrup, Steinfurt, Greven) or cross the border into the Netherlands (Enschede 30 min).
