Carnival parade through the town center of the district capital with an subsequent street festival
While the carnival strongholds of Mainz, Cologne, and Düsseldorf dominate the media image of German carnival, many smaller towns and communities in Rhineland-Palatinate cherish their own Fastnacht traditions, deeply rooted in the region. The Straßenfasching in Kusel is one of the most impressive examples: ever since the founding of the Karnevalverein Kusel 1957 e.V., a parade has wound its way through the town center on Faschingssamstag, attracting attention far beyond the district's borders.
The parade starts punctually at 10:11 AM at Kusel train station, one of the central meeting points for the participating floats and groups. From there, the festive procession moves through the town center to the Kochscher Markt, the central square of the old town. Thousands of spectators line the route, applauding the passing floats in costumes of all kinds and enthusiastically catching the candies, chocolate pieces, and small gifts thrown their way. Local carnival clubs, music groups, schools, sports clubs, and companies from the Kusel district participate with elaborately decorated floats or walking groups.
Each season in Kusel is under its own motto, announced by the Karnevalverein in the weeks before the start of the Fastnacht season, and it permeates the entire program of the season—from the gala sessions to the children's carnival and the Straßenfasching. For 2026, the club has chosen the motto Amore, a tribute to the joy of life, a southern lifestyle, and the connection between music and dance. Many floats and costumes creatively embrace this motto.
After the parade concludes, the Kochscher Markt transforms into a vibrant festival mile. Local restaurateurs, the Karnevalverein, and affiliated clubs provide revellers with drinks, sausages, Palatinate specialties, and sweets. DJs and live acts create a festive atmosphere on a stage until late in the afternoon. Families with children, young people, and older carnival-goers celebrate together, making the Straßenfasching the cultural highlight of the carnival week.
With the motto Amore, the Karnevalverein Kusel chooses a theme for the 2026 season that focuses on the joy of life, Italianità, and emotional conviviality. Many floats, walking groups, and costumes of the participating clubs creatively embrace the motto—from declarations of love for their homeland to allusions to well-known Italian hits and humorous costumes centered around the theme of romance. The town center fills up early in the morning with carnival-goers from the entire Kusel district and the neighboring Saarland.
