Crafts in the Stendal Museum Courtyard
The Stendal Craftsmen's Market draws on a beautiful tradition: on German Unity Day (October 3rd), the Hanseatic City of Stendal opens its museum courtyard and the Altmärkisches Museum for an arts and crafts market. The 12th edition is scheduled for 2026 – a format that consistently positions itself against the commercialization of other markets, focusing on authentic craftsmanship.
Exhibitors include potters, jewelry makers, woodturners, bow makers, blacksmiths, textile artists, and woodworkers. Much is created on-site – the apple juice pressing, the rope making, the blacksmithing in a mobile forge – which gives the market its true charm. It's not just about selling, but about demonstrating. For children, there's a carousel and a craft activity. In parallel, the Tangermünder Tor tower is open until 4:45 PM (last admission).
The Altmärkisches Museum itself is also open – a city museum that tells the story of Stendal and the entire Altmark region. Those who want to understand how a Hanseatic city functioned can get a concise introduction here. Admission to the market: €2 for adults, €0.50 for concessions, children under 6 free.
Stendal is the district capital of the Stendal district and a Hanseatic city with over 1,000 years of history – located in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The brick architecture of the Altmark reaches its peak here: St. Nicholas Cathedral, St. Mary's Church, the Town Hall, city walls with towers like the Tangermünder Tor and Uenglinger Tor.
