Medieval-rooted market day with around 100 stalls — always the last Wednesday in November before the 1st Advent
The Katharinenmarkt in Steinbach is one of the oldest market traditions in Baden-Baden's Rebland. The tradition dates back to medieval market rights that the Steinbach district received centuries ago. The market is named after Saint Catherine of Alexandria — patron saint of farmers and vintners. With her feast day (November 25), the harvest year symbolically ended in the old farmers' calendar; accordingly, the market has a character of thanks for the completed grape harvest and the gathered crops.
Unlike most Christmas markets, the Katharinenmarkt follows a weekday rule: always the last Wednesday in November before the 1st Advent. Since the 1st Advent in 2026 falls on November 29, the market day is Wednesday, November 25, 2026. This weekday anchoring is a special feature that visibly distinguishes the market from the typical assortment of Christmas markets.
Around 100 stalls line the medieval alleys around Kirchplatz and Hauptstraße. The assortment mixes classic market goods (household items, clothing, tools), handicrafts, and a culinary focus on regional specialties from the Rebland: wines from Steinbach vintners, bread, sausages, candied almonds, mulled wine. Restaurants and club huts open their doors — the market tradition thrives on its meeting point character; the market is also a reunion day for the entire region.
Steinbach lies on the slope of the Yburg spur above the Rhine plain, belongs to the city of Baden-Baden, and together with Neuweier and Varnhalt forms the Rebland — one of the most renowned wine-growing areas in the Middle Baden region. The name 'Städtl' for the historic town center refers to Steinbach's former independence. Today, the scene is characterized by renovated half-timbered and sandstone buildings, the parish church of Mariä Himmelfahrt, and wineries such as the renowned Weingut Schloss Neuweier.
As every year for centuries, the market activity follows the weekday rhythm: stall setup and market operations begin in the morning, and visitors stroll through the medieval alleys around Kirchplatz and Hauptstraße until late afternoon. The 2026 assortment will, as usual, range between market goods, handicrafts, and culinary offerings from Rebland vintners.
With its location in the dark season, the market has a special atmosphere: first fairy lights, mulled wine at the huts, a sense of community before the first Advent weekend.
Free admission to the market. Purchases at typical market prices — mulled wine €4–5, wine tasting from Rebland vintners from €3, snacks €5–10.
