Big Band Concert by the State Youth Jazz Orchestra of Rhineland-Palatinate in Kultursommer 2026
The State Youth Jazz Orchestra of Rhineland-Palatinate (LJJO RLP) is the official youth selection big band ensemble of the federal state. Young musicians up to 26 years of age are admitted after annual auditions, trained in multi-day rehearsal phases under renowned lecturers, and subsequently perform in concerts within and outside Rhineland-Palatinate. The orchestra is considered an important talent incubator and a springboard into Germany's professional jazz scene.
In 2026, Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz is dedicated to the motto "The Golden Twenties". The statewide festival program looks back at a decade of cultural awakening, musical innovations, and social upheaval. Jazz played a key role in the 1920s: it came from the USA to Europe, conquered Berlin, Paris, and also the German provinces, and permanently changed the music landscape. The LJJO concert in Landau re-stages this historical connection.
The concert takes place in the Frank-Loebsche Haus – one of Landau's oldest and historically most significant buildings. The Renaissance building on Kaufhausgasse today houses a cultural center with the city archive, library, and a permanent exhibition on the Jewish history of Landau. The covered courtyard offers an intimate, acoustically special venue and creates the fitting setting for big band music experienced up close.
A varied program of big band literature classics, original arrangements, and improvisations is expected. The LJJO RLP works with different band leaders and soloists each year, thus always presenting new musical focal points. The concert is suitable for both jazz lovers and newcomers who want to experience big band sound live.
The LJJO RLP performs in Landau on May 30, 2026 – a concert that musically transfers the spirit of the 1920s to the present. Integrated into the Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz 2026, the program combines big band classics with contemporary original arrangements.
The intimate courtyard of the Frank-Loebsche Haus offers exceptional acoustics and a historic setting that perfectly matches the program's theme. The LJJO RLP is an important talent incubator for the Rhineland-Palatinate jazz scene and regularly performs at renowned festivals.
