A New Holiday, Reinterpreted
The Ehrentag (Day of Honor) is an initiative by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, encouraging cities and municipalities in Germany to create their own local holidays. The idea: to celebrate democracy and cohesion not only on the nationwide Day of German Unity on October 3rd, but also locally with a unique focus. Melle is comprehensively embracing this suggestion for the first time on May 23, 2026.
Motto: For you. For us. For everyone.
The motto articulates the aspiration: a festival that excludes no one, that builds bridges between generations, districts, and population groups. The program reflects this aspiration: music for all tastes, opportunities for encounters organized by clubs and initiatives, a city day with extended shopping hours, and culinary offerings from the region.
Program Highlights
- Music — Stages with different genres in the city center
- Encounters — Booths from clubs, initiatives, and religious communities
- Shopping Pleasure — City center shops open
- Volunteer Recognition — Appreciation of civic engagement
- Culinary Delights — Food trucks and regional specialties
- Family Program — Interactive stations, face painting
City Center as a Stage
The Melle city center, including Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square), pedestrian zones, and central squares, will transform into a festival area for one day. Stages, booths, and interactive stations will be spread across the entire area.
Local Holiday with Symbolic Power
The Ehrentag in Melle is more than a classic city festival. It is understood as a political and social statement: democracy requires local rituals, lived cohesion, and the recognition of the many who support this cohesion — from volunteers and clubs to businesses.
