Anniversary Stadtfest for the 50th Anniversary of the City of Hemmingen at Rathausplatz
The city of Hemmingen, located in the southern outskirts of Hannover, is a product of the Lower Saxony territorial reform. In 1974, the previously independent municipalities of Arnum, Devese, Harkenbleck, Hemmingen-Westerfeld, Hiddestorf, Ohlendorf, and Wilkenburg were merged; in 1976, the new large municipality officially received city status. Today, Hemmingen has around 19,000 inhabitants and unites seven very different districts into a modern city on the outskirts of Hannover. For its 50th anniversary in 2026, the city is organizing a large Stadtfest at Rathausplatz.
The territorial reform of the 1970s was one of the most significant administrative events in the recent history of Lower Saxony. Out of over 4,000 municipalities, around 1,000 were created. For the affected citizens, this was a turning point — many village identities were lost, while others found themselves in new municipal structures. Over five decades, Hemmingen has transformed this challenge into a new urban identity without completely abandoning the village character of its individual districts. The 50th anniversary commemorates this successful development.
The Stadtfest on August 17 and 18, 2026, uses Rathausplatz as the central festival location. This is where the administration, citizen services, and symbolically, the heart of the urban community are located. Over two days, there will be stage programs with live music, gastronomic stands from local providers, association stands from the seven districts, family activities, and special anniversary events. The city administration will present itself, associations will showcase their work, and citizens will meet.
An extraordinary element of the anniversary is the special coin edition from EuroMint. Minted in silver and gold, the special issue permanently documents the 50th anniversary and serves as a lasting memento for both collectors and citizens. It will be available in the run-up to and during the festival, representing an unusual form of anniversary communication — one that focuses on collector value, lasting worth, and representation.
On August 17 and 18, 2026, the city of Hemmingen celebrates its 50th anniversary with the grand anniversary Stadtfest at Rathausplatz. For two days, stage performances, gastronomy, and family activities will shape the scene around the town hall.
