50th Anniversary of the Buchholz Town Festival – three days of strolling and fun in the pedestrian zone with stages and a flea market
Buchholz in der Nordheide, with around 40,000 inhabitants, is one of the largest towns in the Harburg district, located south of Hamburg. The town festival has accompanied the town's development since the 1970s. What began as a small local festival is now one of the largest Volksfeste in the Lüneburg Heath region, attracting visitors from the entire Harburg district as well as the southern outskirts of Hamburg.
With the 2026 edition, the town festival celebrates its 50th anniversary. The anniversary will be marked during the festival with special programmes, a retrospective, and an exhibition on the history of the festival. The town is using the anniversary to underscore the festival's importance to the urban community.
Due to the Lower Saxony municipal elections on September 13, 2026, the town festival has been moved from the traditional second to the third weekend in September (September 18–20). This allows the event to bypass election day and take place without political accompanying issues.
The Buchholz pedestrian zone transforms into a strolling and fun mile over the three festival days. Food stalls offer dishes from various cuisines, commercial exhibitors present goods, and clubs and initiatives introduce themselves. Several stages will feature live music: local bands, regional cover acts, Schlager music, and, in the later hours, disco programmes. Carousels and amusement rides complement the offerings.
A traditional highlight is the Sunday flea market. Private individuals from Buchholz and the region offer used goods at several hundred stalls: books, toys, clothing, household items, collectibles. The flea market extends across several streets and squares in the town centre, attracting buyers from far and wide.
As in previous years, the various stages will provide the musical backdrop to the festival. Local bands, regional cover acts, Schlager programmes, and, in the later hours, disco sets will shape the programme. The exact stage setup and artist lineup will be published in the weeks leading up to the event on the website of the City of Buchholz.
The anniversary allows organizers to set special accents alongside the classic programme. A retrospective with photos from the past five decades and special guest appearances are planned.
The exact 2026 programme will be published by the organiser in late summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years, supplemented by anniversary programme points:
